Walking with History:
Time Travel Novel Competition for Hong Kong Secondary School Students

“Walking with History: Time Travel Novel Competition for Hong Kong Secondary School Students” organized by the Department of History at Hong Kong Shue Yan University and co-organized by the Education Network and the Loke Kok Kuen Chinese Cultural Legacy Research Trust, successfully held its final and closing ceremony on September 14, 2024, at Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

The purpose of this competition is to encourage Hong Kong secondary school students to integrate historical knowledge into creative writing by creating novels with modern and Tang Dynasty time-travel themes, thereby stimulating their interest in history, imagination, and deepening their understanding. Since the launch of the competition, it has attracted enthusiastic participation from over 60 teams from secondary schools across Hong Kong. After several rounds of rigorous selection, 20 teams and nearly 80 participants have emerged and advanced to the final stage.

On the day of the finals, the judging panel was impressive, including renowned drama master Dr. Lo Wai Luk (盧偉力博士), Professor He Qiliang (何其亮教授), head of the History Department at Shue Yan University, and cultural critic Mr. Cheung Wing Hang (張穎恆先生). The judges conducted a comprehensive and detailed evaluation of the entries from multiple dimensions, including the historical accuracy of the novels, creative expression, language use, and unique perspectives. All the entries performed excellently, and the competition was exceptionally fierce.

Finally, Hui Nok Yee (許諾怡), a student from G.T. (Ellen Yeung) College, won the championship with her entry The Time-Space Mystery of the Tang Dynasty Princess's Love. This work is based on the story of Bian Ji (辨機) and Princess Gao Yang (高陽公主), skillfully blending elements of Tang Dynasty history with intricate plot twists, making readers feel as if they are immersed in Tang society, earning unanimous praise from the judges. Hui stated, "I hope this story can make more people fall in love with Chinese history!"

In addition, the students Sui Chi Shing (蕭子誠), Ngai Fu Chun (魏輔俊), and Chu Kin Wang (朱健宏) from the Lui Cheung Kwong Lutheran College jointly created The Delicacies of Tang Dynasty, which won the "Best Novel Sharing Award." The work focuses on the cooking culture forgotten by history, aiming to showcase the living and economic conditions of the people at that time, particularly reflecting the historical context through ancient food.

This competition not only allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of history but also achieved a breakthrough in novel writing, inspiring all participants' enthusiasm and profound insights in historical learning.  This is undoubtedly a highly meaningful activity for the inheritance of Chinese culture.
