Kunqu Opera – Zhou Yu and Younger Qiao

 

In the thirteenth year of Jian’an (建安十三年, 208 AD, ”建安” is the Regnal year of Emperor Xian of Han [漢獻帝]) of the Eastern Han Dynasty (東漢, 25-220 AD), Cao cao (曹操, 155-220 AD, the powerful minister of Eastern Han Dynasty) led his army southward, and the ministers of Eastern Wu (東吳, the Separatist force in the southeast of China which led by Sun Quan [孫權, 182-252 AD]) were terrified. Zhou Yu (175-210 AD), the commander-in-chief of Eastern Wu, rushes back to his residence from the garrison. His wife younger Qiao (小喬), listens to the words of her sister older Qiao (大喬), and urges Zhou Yu to surrender. Zhou Yu explains the advantages and disadvantages of surrendering, and uses the trick to dissuade Xiao Qiao from surrendering and to fight against Cao Cao with one heart.
