The Story of the Wind and the Sun

A Dream of Genius and Fool (《天才白痴夢》)

Performer: TAM Po-sherk (Chinese vertical bamboo flute, 譚寶碩—洞簫) / Barry Chung (Guitar, 結他-鍾慶鴻) / Damon Lau (Piano, 鋼琴-劉俊廷)

Selected from New Century Workshop's Album Midnight Reverie (《午夜夢迴》)

The wind said to the sun, "Let's have a contest to see who has greater power!"

The sun said, "How shall we compete?"

The wind said, "Look, the people down below are all wearing coats. Let's see who can make them take off their coats."

The sun said, "Alright, you go first."

The wind said smugly, "See, I can easily blow their coats away."

The wind gathered all its strength and blew downward, sending gusts of wind sweeping across the ground.

The wind picked up, and people hunched their shoulders, wrapping their coats tightly around themselves.

The stronger the wind blew, the tighter people wrapped their clothes around themselves.

The wind blew until it was exhausted, and had no choice but to give up.

“The benevolent is invincible (仁者無敵)”

Calligraphy by Tam Po-sherk

Now it was the sun's turn.

The sun beamed a radiant smile, and its warm rays shone upon the earth.

Basking in the sunlight, people felt a pleasant warmth and began to take off their coats one by one.

Warmth triumphs over cold.

Kindness triumphs over violence.

The wind had no words to respond, and could only admit defeat.

Contemplating how heaven and earth are boundless and eternal,

I lament that human life is forever burdened with toil and ceaseless wandering.

The glorious ages of the past I can no longer hope to witness,

and the bright world of the future I shall never live to see

(惟天地之無窮兮,哀人生之長勤。往者餘弗及兮,來者吾不聞).”

——A verse from Songs of Chu

Calligraphy by Tam Po-sherk

The benevolent have no enemies.

To understand yourself is to understand the world.

To master yourself is to master the affairs of the world.

True strength lies not in appearance, but in substance.

True strength lies not in confrontation, but in compassion — in the ability to put oneself in another's place.

Compassion is a powerful energy that brings warmth, tolerance, and joyful delight.

“Two words of wisdom (知) guide a life well lived: awareness (知道) — knowing what you truly need; and contentment (知足) — cherishing what you already have.

(人生兩個知字:一個知道,知道自己需要什麼;一個知足,知足自己所擁有).”

Calligraphy by Tam Po-sherk

See yourself, see heaven and earth, see all living beings.

Choose magnanimity, for great virtue can carry all things.

Choose kindness, for the kind-hearted possess a boundless spirit.

Choose tolerance, for a step back reveals a vast and boundless sky.

Choose integrity, for evil can never triumph over righteousness.

Cherish every encounter that comes your way.

Grateful, for the meeting within the flow of time.

Grateful, to have known each other through the passage of time.

May your heart forever shine with radiant light.

Let warmth forever dwell within the hearts of you and me.
